On the 9th of October 1917, Charles was wounded in action with shell wounds to his legs. He was transferred to England on the 31st of December 1917, and admitted on the 2nd of January to the 1st London General Hospital in Camberwell with a severe wound to his right leg, and an amputated left leg. Charles left England on the 30th of June 1918, and returned to Australia on the 1st of September 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit on the 24th of July 1919.
